How To Make A Dutch Braid: A Step-by-Step Guide

A Dutch braid, also known as a reverse braid or an inside-out braid, is one of the most distinctive hairstyles. Although the hairstyle appears to be tough to achieve, it is actually pretty simple. It employs the same technique that you may have already learned in the shape of the French braid. The only difference is that instead of crossing the braid sections over, you cross the strands beneath and then into the center while completing the Dutch braid. This is why the braid is also known as a reverse braid.

Here’s an easy method for creating a simple Dutch braid in your hair.

Things You Will Need :

  • U pins
  • Elastic band

Step 1

Begin with dry or damp hair. You may wear this hairstyle with both straight and wavy hair. Comb your hair softly and draw it back. Apply hair mousse to the mid-lengths of your hair (but not the roots). This product will give your hair more volume and a lustrous, “just-washed” appearance. It is usually lighter on the hair than gels, which weigh your hair down and give it a crispy appearance.

Now, make a side partition.

Divide your hair at the top of your head into three sections.

Step 3

Start making the braid, but instead of crossing the strands over the middle piece, you will have to cross them UNDER the middle section.

Step 4

step 4

Once you’ve crossed the sections twice under the central portion, grab another section from the side and attach it to one of your strands before crossing it again under the middle section.

Step 5

Continue to follow the steps above, going diagonally towards the opposite end.

Continue braiding until you’ve reached the end. Secure your braid with a black elastic band, then cover it with hair.
Finish your hairstyle by applying a hair spray and you’re all set!

step 7

A Dutch braid looks best on long to medium-length, wavy hair. Don’t worry if your hair is thin and straight. You could always curl your hair at home. You can curl your hair naturally or with a curling iron. The sock bun method is one of the easiest ways to achieve natural curls. All you have to do is dampen your hair and split it into pieces. Remember, the narrower the parts, the tighter the curls will be. Place the sock at the tip of your hair and begin rolling it. Roll it until you reach the desired starting point for the curls, then tie it at the end. Keep it overnight, and when you unroll the sock in the morning, you’ll notice that your hair has curled beautifully.

Quick Tips

  • You can accessorize your braid by sticking some pearls or shiny beads on it to give it a more feminine look.
  • You can also wear a hair band or put natural flowers on it to make your hairstyle look more stylish and girly.
  • To give your hairstyle a variation, you can make a Dutch braid as a head band. You can also make the braid by including all your hair in the braid.
